When it comes to the actual gameplay experience, that’s pretty great. This will do in excess of 150 inch display size, should you need that, and for a pretty wide variety of games it’s brilliant. While I don’t think this is going to be the perfect option for FPS games where seeing every detail up close can help, but in racing games for example it looks smooth and responsive, and generally great.

When it comes to using the projector for other things than gaming, it’s great. It’s crisp, well coloured to the eye, and damn bright at 3400 lumens.

Would I put one on my desk? If I had the space, yes. This is possibly the perfect have your friends over to game device and rather nice to watch too, so definitely.

The HD29H’s unique game talents aren’t its only achievement. It also proves a surprisingly effective home cinema machine, combining more brightness and more contrast than any other similarly priced HDR-capable projector.

Many projectors claim to be designed for gaming, but no others back this up with an input lag figure as low as the 8.4ms Optoma claims for the HD29H.  My own measurements suggest that this claimed figure isn’t optimistic. In fact, I measured the time the projector takes to render its images at fractionally under 8ms.

HD29H is also the first projector that can play HD games all the way up to 120Hz refresh rates while still retaining the 8ms or so response times.

This blindingly fast DLP gaming projector brings HDR support to bright, colourful 1080p images. The combo is a bigscreen winner.

This Optoma may be gaming-focused, but its image quality is solid with movies too.

Heaps of fun

As an all-purpose media room projector, Optoma’s HD29H has a lot going for it. Its bright output makes it easy to use in less than perfect conditions and picture quality is impressive, save for some black level shortcomings. The combination of 1080p and HDR is unusual, but worthwhile. Brilliant for gaming, good for general entertainment, not too pricey… and heaps of fun
